My unofficial definition of SEO (search engine optimisation) is to tinker with your website and promote its content in numerous different ways with the aim of ranking it higher in Google and other search engines for relevant keywords, in order to generate more quality traffic for your website.
But it’s also much more than that, it’s a long-term play to generate ongoing, consistent and relevant incoming traffic which will just keep on coming in. It fits great with my personal ethos of choosing long-term over short-term – which is one of the reasons I choose to specialise in it.
You can split what I do into different areas, including:
- Technical optimisation – making sure everything on your website is running as it should and is set up in such a way that makes it easy for search engines and users to use.
- Keyword research – research and planning to make sure you are targeting the best keywords possible on each page and for each piece of content.
- On-page optimisation – getting the layout and structure of a page just right whilst incorporating your keywords, to let search engines know to show your page when users search for certain keywords.
- Off-page optimisation – building backlinks and other resources to link to your website to show search engines that it’s well thought of by others and therefore worth ranking highly.
